Al-Azhar University was founded in 970 AD during the Fatimid dynasty in Cairo. It is one of the oldest universities in the Islamic world and holds an important position in Islamic sciences. It began as a school for teaching jurisprudence and Sharia before expanding to include modern specializations such as engineering and medicine, and annually receives tens of thousands of students from various countries.
